FITNESS TRAINER
I. INTRODUCTION:
This position is located at the Denich Gym in the Sports & Fitness Division at Morale Welfare & Recreation (MWR) aboard Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The purpose of this position is to provide instructions to patrons in a variety of physical fitness classes.
II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Screen participants for cardiovascular risk factors prior to exercise via a comprehensive medical history and health habits questionnaire. (Refers high-risk patrons to Supervisor).
- Recommend means for modifying cardiovascular risk factor, body fat and improving nutritional habits within guideline recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Assist in designing individualized exercise programs for patrons based on their goals or current fitness status by performing fitness testing. (Aerobic capacity, blood pressure, heart rate and body composition).
- Incumbent will lead classes, provide personal instructions and be informed on correct exercise procedures and nutrition programs. Conduct an ongoing variety of fitness classes and set up individual fitness programs for patrons on various fitness equipment. ensuring that the patron fully understands how to safely exercise and operate all fitness equipment. Provides a variety of ongoing fitness programs and instructions such as introduction to fitness lifestyle changes, basic muscular toning. circuit training, aerobic conditioning training, etc.
- instructs and demonstrates proper biomechanic technique for use of all resistance training and cardiovascular exercise equipment Explains applicable kinesiology of each machine. Shows patrons bow to properly monitor heart rate while exercising and provide patrons with the knowledge of basic kinesiology as it relates to resistance training machines and free weight equipment. Demonstrates and explains the importance of warm-up, cool-down and flexibility.
- Enforces all rules and regulations of the fitness center and higher authority elements are followed. Ensure the fitness facility operation is maintained in accordance with MWR and Navy regulations and instructions. Issue workout charts and other additional paperwork. Responsible for upkeep of records (financial transactions, daily activity reports. client records, health risk forms and utilization records etc).
- Attends meetings, workshops and seminars presented by the Fitness Director and other outside organizations. Keep up to date on the latest training techniques and developments. Implements new training materials into the fitness programs that promote the health and well-being of patrons.
- Coordinates with Pitncu Director and 8Slist with developing educational material for patrons (flyers, video, bulletin boards. etc.) and designs and implements facility and community programs.
- Assists with preparing an annual budget for facility operation and all fitness requirements.
- Incumbent must exercise tact, good manners and courtesy when serving and assisting customers. This will be expressed by tactfully responding to patron inquiries and assisting in prompt and friendly manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
III. REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Practical Knowledge of Exercise Science, Physical Fitness or related field.
- Must possess previous experience as group exercise/fitness instructor or have current accredited certifications like (the American college of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Certification from the Cooper Institution of Aerobic Research, American Exercise Council (ACE), or other nationally recognized certifying agency or able to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.
- Knowledge of basic cardiovascular risk factors, weight loss and nutritional habits, proper biomechanic techniques and fitness profile testing.
- Must have the proper skills for instruction and proper use of exercise equipment.
- Must have the ability to handle emergency situations.
- Must be able to follow instructions on performing duties.
- Must possess current CPR and first aid qualifications.
- Must be able to assess patrons’ interests and needs.
- Should have knowledge of publicity materials.
- Must have the ability to maintain records and reports and the skill to deal effectively with others.
- Work includes lifting, pushing and pulling, utilizing all major muscle groups in the demonstration of exercise and equipment and aerobic activities.
- Must be capable of operating all equipment used in the various programs.
- May require some lifting of boxes and stock merchandise.
EVALUATION: Candidates will be evaluated on quality and nature of the experience pertinent to the position. Applications must show sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the full range of duties of the Fitness Trainer position.

Conditions of Employment

- Obtain a Brown Card from the Ministry of Labor as proof of eligibility to work with US Government.
