Library Aide
INTRODUCTION: This position is located at the MWR Library, U.S. Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The purpose of this position is to assist patrons in research and to obtain desired information in library books/materials.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent performs registration duties, explaining to new patrons library policies and rules regarding borrowing library materials. Charges, discharges, and shelves books and other library materials. Checks returned materials for conditions and repairs as needed. Sort and file daily circulation. Assist patrons on the usage of card catalog and library arrangements; directs patrons to location of sources, relays request for difficult research or assistance to Librarian or Lead Library Technician. Types overdue notices and letters. Processes new books, typing all cards, pockets, labels, stamping and covering same, and filing all cards. Miscellaneous related tasks as assigned, such as housekeeping duties. These consist of, but are not limited to the orderly arrangement of books and materials, checking for alpha/class order; dusting and straightening of stacks as necessary; checking shelves or outstanding books and materials. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work independently, making decision in accordance with established policies/guidelines. Ability to deal courteously and efficiently with the public. Ability to type accurately, speed not essential. Must have skills in oral and written communication.
EVALUATION: Candidates will be evaluated on quality and nature of the experience pertinent to the position. Applications must show sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the full range of duties of the Library Aide.
