School Liaison

The School Liaison serves as the communications link between military families with school-aged children, the command, and local DODEA School, W.T. Sampson. As the “point person” for educational issues, the School Liaison is here to assist military families in addressing school-related issues.

Whether you are active duty, a reservist, or part of the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay component civilian workforce, the School Liaison is here to ensure that your child has access to the full range of services available in the community. In addition to providing information about the school, the School Liaison also works to assist families who choose educational alternatives such as homeschool, independent study, dual credit, or online programs.

Information and Links:

Free and Reduce Lunch Program: (FARM)

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) school year, breakfasts and lunches administered by the Student Meal Program outside of the continental United States (OCONUS), will incorporate an associated fee unless authorized as free or reduced. Since March 2020, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) waived the cost of student meals, however, this policy waiver expired on 30 June 2022, and as a result, meals will no longer be free of charge.

The Navy Exchange Service Command School Meal Program operates the DoD Student Meal Program (SMP) in 9 OCONUS locations. The SMP offers meals, on a break-even basis, in accordance with USDA nutrition standards. Whole grains, lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, and low-fat milk are offered on a daily basis. The mission of the NEX Student Meal Program is to provide delicious and nutritious meals to students.

To apply for free or reduced-price student meals, applications can be submitted. Applications must be resubmitted each year for free and reduced-price meal eligibility and can be turned in anytime during the year. All families are encouraged to apply no matter their economic situation. For additional information and application click here: www.myNavyExchange.com/smp

Homeschool

Some parents elect to homeschool their children while onboard NAVSTA Guantanamo Bay. This is a legal option open to all active duty military, DOD civilians, and contractors. If you elect to home school, per base regulation, all homeschoolers must register with the School Liaison office.

Homeschool families may request special education evaluation and services in the DoDEA schools. Homeschool families also have the option of benefitting from some of the activities or classes within the DoDEA schools.  For more information contact the school or your School Liaison.
